Amanda Perkins worked as a nurse in the UK for almost twenty years between stints living in a variety of far-flung places. Latterly she worked withterminally ill people, work she found both illuminating and deeply rewarding. An advocate for full pain relief for her patients and comfortable with the medical model of care she imagined she would give birth in hospital taking advantage of all the pain relief options available.
Having attended a Mama Bamba Way course whilst pregnant Amanda became convinced of the huge benefits to both herself and her baby of a completely natural birth. She developed such trust in the process that she chose a home birth. Despite having a 34 hour 'back labour' she felt completely in her power as a woman, bonded immediately with her daughter and truly enjoyed experience. She feels it has had far reaching positive effects on her self regard and the quality of her relationship with her child.
She became a staunch advocate for natural birth and has since trained as a Mama Bamba Facilitator, a Hypno-birthing Facilitator and as a Doula.
Amanda feels passionately that the high intervention and Caesar rate in South Africa is contrary to best practice in medicine and is saddened that women are being denied this peak life experience. Her current focus is teaching Mama Bamba Way antenatal courses to free women of their fears around natural birth and empower their partners to act as advocates when giving birth in hospital. Her core goal is to help more babies be birthed gently into an atmosphere of nurturance and love.
